This article about conservation at the following web site appeared a few days ago in the Market Watch section of the Dow Jones News Reports. It is interesting to note that 3 of the 5 top "green" ideas involve reducing water consumption.

Note that in item #2 of the list, the author cites water savings of 20% comparing the newer High Efficiency Toilets(HET) to the existing 1.6 gallons per flush standard of the Ultra Low Flush Toilet (ULFT). When compared to older model toilets that use 3.5 - 7 gallons per flush, the HET products represent a water use reduction of between 70% and 84%. This equates to between 12 and 29 units ( 9000 - 22000 gallons) of water saved per year for a 2 person household. Keep in mind as well that for every unit of water not used about 17 kwh of electrical energy is also not generated. So saving water helps the environment by not only leaving more water in our rivers and streams but also by creating less CO2.
The LTCWD has a program of rebates to help offset a substantial part of the cost of new water saving wash machines, toilets, and shower heads.
