Free Emergency Water Storage Program - 2/18/08 Update

Update 2/18/08, From Tom Uridel, Perry Blackmon, Frazier Miller:

We're finally nearing the delivery of the 5 gallon emergency water storage containers that many of you have requested.  As a reminder, this program is free of charge, and brought to you by the Los Trancos Water District.

We expect delivery of the containers near the end of this month, and will contact you shortly thereafter with pick-up and/or delivery details.  We'll likely stage the containers at the historic "red shed" on Lake Road (near 121 Lake ) and deliver them from there.  We intend to distribute water "maintenance" instructions so people know how to maintain a clean emergency water supply.  Our new board member Tom Uridel is spearheading the order and distribution effort with help from other board members.  Tom can be reached at 851-7091, or at
tvuridel@earthlink.net

For those interested, 450 containers were ordered for 101 households.  This equates to a 40% participation rate which is terrific and higher than we expected.  The neighborhood will be much better prepared in case of emergency.

Finally, we ordered an additional 60 containers for those who might not have heard the first time. Contact Tom if you fit into that category.

Information on the Program:

The Los Trancos Water District is now offering a FREE Emergency Water Storage Program for any and all residents.  The program is intended to better prepare all of us in case of a long-term (ie 3-5 day) water supply outage.  Experts say that in the event of a 7.0+ earthquake in the Bay Area, there is a very real chance that our water supply would be disrupted for some portion of time.  Are you prepared with up to 5-days of back-up water supplies?

This FREE Emergency Water Storage Program is cheap, simple and straight-forward.  The Los Trancos Water District is using some of its program funds to purchase 5-gallon water storage containers for any residents that need them.  You can purchase up to 5 containers through this program.  Once we collect the names of all participants we will make a bulk order and distribute the containers some time this Fall/Winter.  Upon distribution of containers to residents, we will have instructions for proper storage and maintenance of water supplies.

This Water Storage Program has been tightly coordinated with the existing Los Trancos and Vista Verde Emergency Preparedness Teams

Details of the program are as follows:

  • Yes, this is the fine print!!
  • Any resident may participate
  • Up to 5 containers per household - we will try to keep rough tabs on how many households participate.
  • Once we have a total count, the LT Water District will select the container model and make a bulk purchase for distribution.  We will contact you when they are ready.
  • It will be up to the households/participants to come pick the containers up at a central location. Details on pick-up to follow.
  • We will provide instructions on how to store and maintain water.
  • This program is offered for a limited time (ie, while funds last).  While we don't have a specific end date in mind, the intent of this program is that this is a one-time purchase for the community.
  • The funds for this program are made possible by the Los Trancos Water District.  They come out of the "special funds" budget - one of which is emergency preparedness.
  • No back-dating or subsidy of water container purchases previously made and there is no ability to get cash instead of containers (yes, people do actually ask this question!) - and please don't sign-up and re-sell the containers.
  • Picture of the type of container attached - though this may or may not be the exact model eventually purchased.
